Learn to Meditate


Before you read on…. I would like to clarify a couple of points.

Meditation is –  almost for everyone. 

Those that have diagnosed mental illness or  depression are advised to seek a consultation with a medical specialist to determine if meditation is suitable. I would suggest that an alternative to meditation would be to   strengthen and stabilise the nervous system and mind with other practices.   If you have diagnosed symptoms perhaps;  Gentle yoga for Good health & calmness  or other meditative like activities, such as appropriate; breathing, yoga & energisation exercises, positive affirmations, chanting may be suitable.

It is not necessary to sit on the floor for the  Meditation I teach.  If you are unable to sit cross-legged comfortably  or come to the floor, I am able to adjust an appropriate  comfortable sitting position in a chair, with your back supported.

What kind of meditation do I teach?

A classical  Vedic Meditation technique known as  Hong-Sau, which  has been practised  for centuries, you could say it has  been tested & tried. If you are familiar with Paramahamsa Yogananda, it was one of his main teaching techniques. Hong Sau meditation is not mindfulness meditation, but it will develop mindfulness. It is a technique that is easy, simple and feels very natural. There is no forced concentration to visualise or this or that or push through thoughts, so it doesn’t feel like you are trying to Meditate.

About the practice of the technique

Hong-sau technique develops concentration on the breath, aided by silent repetition of a special mantra that helps to focus & quiet the mind. A  practice of  gentle Yoga Asana (physical exercise) & Pranayama ( breathing techniques ) are practised in preparation for Hong Sau Meditation, both of which are easy to learn and practice.

Who would benefit from Hong Sau Meditation?

Anyone that is ready to experience a calm mind, better health & relationships, yoga students  whom have been practicing postures for a while and spiritual students  that desire to know & explore other limbs of the yoga sutras.  There are no limits to how the technique will evolve as you develop your practice,   just so long as you practice.

What if I am to restless to Meditate?

A common concern for people is that they are to active or the mind is too busy to meditate, which suggests that they may be a good fit for Hong Sau meditation. The practice of gentle yoga & pranayama  is a remedy that specifically focuses on calming ourselves before we sit & practice. With the technique itself offering an effortless settling of the mind in short time.


What Hong Sau meditation is not

  • Hong Sau meditation is non sectarian or religious, in this way it is for all. It is not passive, and is not sleep. Meditation will not solve all your problems, but it can be a useful tool for problem solving.
  • Some people feel that, running, walking, gardening, swimming, listening to uplifting music is meditation. It is true that activities we love can support a meditative mind, however –  they can only take us so far, true meditation allows for a deeper experience of silence, peace & calmness, which requires sitting in stillness & quiet.
  • Not a passive state.  It is a state of active (yet calm), alert awareness that results from lifting your level of energy and consciousness to a higher state: superconsciousness.

What meditation is

  • Able to improve every aspect of your life. Success in meditation is, not about psychic experiences, but rather how you are changing as a person: becoming calmer, better able to cope with difficulties, and happier under all circumstances.
  • A practice of disconnecting from sensory awareness and focusing on Spirit within.
  • A process of returning to your own inner center, learning to relate to life and to your environment from who you truly are, not from the way that other people (or your own past habits) try to define you. Living at your inner center facilitates every other activity.

 How do I learn?

Step One: Attend an introduction to Hong Sau

The first step is to see if this technique & me  as the teacher resonates with you.  Come to a  introduction to Hong-Sau –  about 1.5 hours. This is an opportunity to learn a brief history of Hong sau, how it differs from other approaches and why it is a powerful tool. You will also get to meet me  and other folk practising and check out the space we practice from, each week in a group (satsang).  If you can’t make it to the intro or simply want an preview watch  this video here.

 Step Two: The benefits of meditating in a group 

Once you have learnt the technique and it resonates  you can attend a weekly group meditation.  Satsang- sanskrit – (coming together in a group) creates an up lifting,  inspiring & motivated  environment. No one  in the group is more or less important all participants are equal developing the attitude of acceptance, respect & no judgment. Meditating in a group develops a habit – we all know how challenging creating a positive new habit can be!

Attending a weekly group meditation also offers opportunities for guidance & support; with any questions that may come up as you progress in your practice.

How much will it cost to learn and participate in the weekly mediation?

In alignment with Vedic offerings,  you contribute what you can according to where you are in your life for  the introduction and  weekly group meditations.  This same structure applies to  Gentle yoga for good health and calmness  on tuesdays and thursdays this enables people from all walks of life to access high quality & experienced meditation and Yoga facilitation.  Suggested contributions for the introduction to Hong Sau  sliding scale of  $0 -$50 and weekly meditations $0 -$15.
